Ange Postecoglou will surely hand ‘phenomenal’ Tottenham player his Premier League debut vs Bournemouth

Ange Postecoglou faces some key selection decisions when Tottenham Hotspur play Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon.

Tottenham fell to a 4-2 defeat at Brighton on Thursday after putting in one of their worst displays of the season.

Spurs created a decent number of chances on the night and even threatened to make a late comeback after going 4-0 down.

But it was ultimately their defending which let them down on the night, with Ange Postecoglou’s men giving away two needless penalties.

Tottenham were without Cristian Romero as the Argentine is set to be sidelined for around four weeks after picking up a hamstring injury against Everton last weekend.

Postecoglou opted for a centre-back pairing of Ben Davies and Emerson Royal. But it’s fair to say the duo struggled at the Amex Stadium, particularly Royal.

And in our view, Ashley Phillips should get an opportunity at centre-back against Bournemouth today.

Postecoglou will surely hand Phillips Tottenham debut against Bournemouth

Phillips was snapped up from Blackburn Rovers for a fee worth over the summer.

The 18-year-old is yet to make his Spurs debut but has been impressing behind the scenes at Hotspur Way.

Indeed, Dejan Kulusevski has already claimed that Phillips is ready to make the step up to first-team football.

There have also been claims that the defender has impressed Postecoglou in training this season.

Phillips looked set to get an opportunity back in November after Micky van de Ven picked up an injury while Romero was also suspended at the time. But the Englishman picked up an ankle injury at the worst possible time.

Postecoglou has shown he prefers Emerson Royal at centre-back over the likes of Eric Dier and Phillips so far. But after an unconvincing defensive display from Royal on Thursday, it feels like the right time for the Aussie boss to try something different in central defence.

While Phillips lacks experience at the top level, it was evident that Spurs had no recognised central defender in the side against Brighton.

It would be a huge gamble for Postecoglou to start Phillips against an in-form Bournemouth side. But it also feels like an ideal moment for the ‘’ youngster to finally get some minutes under his belt, whether that be as a starter or from the bench.
