Ange Postecoglou says Tottenham youngster reads the game ‘really well’

Tottenham Hotspur are nearing the end of their pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea, with just one game remaining before returning to Europe.

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, like many other top Premier League managers, hasn’t had the luxury of working with the full squad over the past few weeks.

Tottenham had a host of players competing at Euro 2024 and the Copa America, and some are still on their post-tournament holidays.

Nevertheless, Spurs have done well so far in pre-season, winning all of their games so far, including those in Japan and South Korea.

Postecoglou brought a number of young talents on the tour, including one who he has now described as “very composed”.

Ange Postecoglou hails Tottenham talent Archie Gray

The player in question is Archie Gray, who joined Tottenham from Leeds United earlier this summer.

The 18-year-old made a huge name for himself last season, playing a big part in the Whites’ progress to the Championship playoff final.

Gray’s quality and high ceiling, combined with Leeds’ failure to earn promotion to the Premier League, meant Tottenham were successful in their pursuit of the player.

The teenager started for Tottenham against Vissel Kobe, where he looked bright, and was also in the XI for the narrow win over the K-League XI.

Speaking to after the game, Postecoglou praised Gray, though he also suggested the new signing needs to bulk up so as to cope with the physicality of the Premier League.

“Archie, he’s what he’s shown the whole time,” said the Tottenham boss.

“He’s been very composed, he seems to understand the game really well and for the most part, I thought he was taking up the right positions.

“But again (as with Lucas Bergvall), physically I think we’re gonna have to build him up.”

Gray likely to get decent amount of game time at Tottenham this year

Gray is one of the most exciting young players in the country. Indeed, some have argued that he may just be the biggest English talent since Declan Rice.

Tottenham have done well to swoop on and sign him ahead of fellow London outfit Brentford, who very nearly got a deal over the line.

With Spurs set to compete in the Europa League this season, there’s a good chance we may see Gray in a fair bit of competitive action in the coming months.

Tottenham are next in action on Saturday, when they take on Bayern Munich in Seoul, before facing the same opponents in north London a week later.

Destiny Udogie could be fit for the first meeting against the Bundesliga’s third-placed team, according to Postecoglou.
