Ange Postecoglou says Tottenham have a young talent who’s really ‘working hard’ to impress the coaches

Tottenham Hotspur have made a real name for themselves in recent years when it comes to giving youth a chance.

Spurs have signed some great young gems over the past few years, such as Djed Spence, Destiny Udogie and Pape Matar Sarr.

More recently, the likes of Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, Wilson Odobert and Yang Min-hyeok have all signed for Tottenham.

In addition, Ange Postecoglou has been promoting academy talents, with the likes of Mikey Moore, Will Lankshear and Jamie Donley all getting a chance.

Now, Postecoglou has spoken about another Tottenham academy graduate who’s been “working hard” to try and win the Spurs first-team coaches over.

Ange Postecoglou says Dane Scarlett has been ‘working hard’ at Tottenham

The player in question is Dane Scarlett, who is now in and around the first-team after a number of loan spells away from Tottenham.

The 20-year-old has played for Portsmouth, Ipswich Town and Oxford United, the latter spell only coming to an end late in January.

Postecoglou opted to keep Scarlett at Tottenham and he has made three appearances since returning from Oxford.

The 20-year-old scored and assisted against Elfsborg in the Europa League and bagged an assist against Ipswich in the Premier League.

Postecoglou, speaking to reporters ahead of the Manchester City clash, revealed how hard Scarlett has been working after returning to N17.

“Yeah, look, he’s working hard, Dane, like you said, he’s had a couple of difficult loans and that’s part of the process as well for him,” he told .

“We were just talking about Djed (Spence), who had three difficult loans, so some of it is just perseverance and keep working hard and waiting for your opportunity.

“He has done well for us. I said when he came back, he wasn’t in the greatest physical condition and he’s working hard on that and hopefully he gets more opportunities.”

Postecoglou then went on to criticise the concept of an assist, though he stressed that Scarlett’s goal contribution was a good one.

“As an aside I’ve got to say the assist is the most useless statistic in world football,” he said.

“Seriously, it could come off your backside, fall to somebody on the halfway line he scores, and it’s an assist.

“So it doesn’t impress me, but Dane’s assist at the weekend was a good one.”

Scarlett is likely to be in the squad for when Tottenham host Man City on Wednesday night.

Peter Crouch makes comparison between Dane Scarlett and Harry Kane

Peter Crouch has recently said that Scarlett reminds him of Harry Kane, with both having had a similar career trajectory in their formative years.

“I don’t think you should be disheartened when you go out on loan,” the former Tottenham forward said after the Elfsborg game. “You have to have experiences.

“There was a certain number nine, Harry Kane, at this football club that went on loan to Leyton Orient, Millwall, Leicester, and ended up becoming a legend of this club.

“Of course that is a lot for Dane Scarlett to live up to, that calibre of player. But when he came on I thought his all-round game was brilliant.

“He held the ball up well, he set up the second goal, his touches around the box too.

“His movement was really good and he gets on the end of the Dejan Kulusevski cross and his confidence grows from there.”
