Ange Postecoglou says Spurs have landed a player he wouldn’t have expected to sign
Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou says he was “really excited” when Johan Lange presented him with the opportunity to sign Timo Werner.
The Spurs boss, speaking to , admitted he didn’t expect a player like Werner to become available to the Lilywhites at this moment in time.
On Tuesday evening, Tottenham announced the of the Germany international on an initial loan deal from RB Leipzig until the end of the season.
Spurs have the option to make the signing of Werner permanent in the summer, added the club’s official website.
The 27-year-old joins Tottenham in wake of a tricky first half of the season at Leipzig, and gets a second chance in the Premier League after a difficult stint at Chelsea.

Werner joined the Blues to considerable fanfare from Leipzig in 2020, but ended up leaving two years later.
He did very well at Leipzig initially following his return, with 16 goals and six assists from 40 appearances last term.
However, injuries restricted him to just 14 outings, 386 minutes of game time, two goals and one assist for the Bundesliga side in 2023-24.
Ange Postecoglou feels Timo Werner will fit in well at Tottenham
Despite Werner’s lack of game time, Postecoglou feels the player won’t need much time to hit the ground running at N17, because the system should suit him well.
“No, again, you have to look into that,” the Spurs boss began.
“It’s fair to say Leipzig play a little bit differently now and somebody like Timo, the system they play doesn’t necessarily suit him and he does have some competition.
“It’s fair to say that if Timo was playing regularly and scoring goals, he wouldn’t be here. We wouldn’t be able to afford him. It’s as simple as that.”
Postecoglou then spoke about how excited he was when the opportunity to bring Werner to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium arose.
“You’re looking for these opportunities and potentially looking beyond the obvious to say, ‘there’s an opportunity here’,” the Spurs boss continued.
“When Johan [Lange] presented it to me, I was really excited by it because I thought ‘here’s an opportunity that normally wouldn’t come across our desk at this point in time where we are as a club’.
“Our priority was the centre-back position but I could see some real possibilities for him playing in our system that maybe at Leipzig, where they’ve changed the way they play that maybe the opportunities wouldn’t be as plentiful for him there.”

People forget just how highly rated Werner was when he joined Chelsea.
And you just need to look at his for Leipzig and for Germany to remember how good he can be when firing on all cylinders.
For Leipzig, he has 113 goals and 47 assists from 213 outings. For Germany, he has 24 goals and six assists from 57 appearances.
Indeed, his tally for Chelsea isn’t that bad as it’s been made out to be either – 44 goals/assists from 89 outings.
