Ange Postecoglou shares why Ryan Mason was so ‘disappointed’ with Tottenham’s James Maddison last week

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has revealed that Ryan Mason was so annoyed with James Maddison’s set-pieces last weekend.

The Englishman picked up an assist against Crystal Palace and had a fairly good game overall. But, he failed to produce his usual quality from the dead ball, and Tottenham‘s coaches, especially Mason, were far from happy.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou says Ryan Mason was disappointed with James Maddison

Many top clubs have set-piece coaches these days, and some sides have massively benefitted from such an appointment.

Arsenal, for example, are the best team in the Premier League with respect to set-piece goals, and Nicolas Jover has been hailed as the hero for helping them achieve that record.

At Tottenham, however, Spurs don’t have a dedicated coach for dead-ball situations. Ryan Mason has been tasked to work on that side of the game with the players, and he has been doing well.

In the game against Crystal Palace last weekend, however, some of James Maddison‘s deliveries were poor, and Ange Postecoglou has now revealed that Mason was annoyed by that.

He said, as per : “Delivery is vital. Last week wasn’t great. Madders is usually good at them but I thought we had a lot and I know Mase was pretty disappointed with that.

“There are always areas you can improve and those guys practise. It does help. As much as the organisation, you still need somebody who can execute. If you’ve got, and I’m going back a bit here, David Beckham on a free-kick, you don’t need a set-piece coach.”

Maddison will be key against Aston Villa

Tottenham travel to Birmingham to take on Aston Villa tomorrow.

Both sides play a risky high-line, which is brilliant when it works but can be catastrophic if their offside trap fails.

Tottenham have quick players like Heung-min Son, and Gabriel Agbonlahor admitted that he’s afraid of the South Korean running in behind tomorrow.

The key thing for Son would be for his teammates to find him at the right time. James Maddison is excellent at that, and we think he will be key if Tottenham are to beat Aston Villa.

The £40 million () Spurs star has picked up eight assists in the Premier League so far this season, and we won’t be surprised if he takes his tally up to double figures at Villa Park tomorrow.
