Ange Postecoglou says £10m Spurs player with 5 starts this season has been ‘training well’

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has praised Ben Davies and several other Spurs fringe players for how they’ve been training during a tricky time for the club.

The Tottenham manager was speaking to ahead of Thursday’s Premier League meeting with West Ham, in which Spurs will hope to get back to winning ways.

Tottenham were flying high in the early stages of the season, but a disastrous number of injuries and suspensions depleted the Spurs ranks.

The North Londoners have lost three and drawn one of their last four Premier League games, although the draw was against Manchester City at the Etihad.

Tottenham’s draw with Pep Guardiola’s side was achieved despite the fact Spurs didn’t have a single established senior centre-back in action.

Davies, a versatile defender who can feature at both left-back and centre-back, did well in the 3-3 draw in Manchester.

The £10million man played solidly at the back and won an important diving header that ended up setting Spurs away for Giovani Lo Celso to score.

Davies has 320 Tottenham appearances under his belt, including nine this season, of which have been starts.

Tottenham ace Ben Davies has been training well

On Wednesday, asked Postecoglou how pleased he was with the Tottenham fringe players who have stepped up admirably.

“It’s been important,” he began. “Because out of necessity they’ve got an opportunity and sometimes in that kind of scenario you’re very reliant on their ability to come in and not disrupt the flow of what we’re trying to do too much.

“As much as by necessity I was always heartened by training every day, guys like Gio and Bryan Gil, and even Ben Davies who has hasn’t had a lot of game time. They’ve been training well and Emerson has been training well.

“We’re obviously asking them to do a little bit of a different role, and that’s another challenge but again I come back to their application and determination to play our football, which has been key to that.

“As I keep say, Wolves aside, our level of performance has been pretty good considering what we’ve had to go through so far.”

Although Davies may not be a regular starter for Tottenham, his talent, work ethic and attitude have endeared him to many a Spurs manager over the past nine years.

He’s a great player to have in the Tottenham ranks and in the dressing room, and no doubt he’ll continues to give his all to Spurs over the coming years.
