Ange Postecoglou delivers his honest verdict on Djed Spence’s performance for Tottenham vs Hearts

Despite all the talk of Djed Spence leaving Tottenham Hotspur this summer, Ange Postecoglou handed the defender 45 minutes against Hearts.

At half-time, Spence replaced Pedro Porro on the right, delivering an eye-catching performance in front of Postecoglou.

The 23-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Genoa, and many believed that Spence would join the Serie A club permanently.

It was even reported that Genoa’s CEO was in London to negotiate a deal for Spence, but the move appeared to then collapse.

As you’d expect, Spence has since returned to first-team training, perhaps hoping for one more shot under Postecoglou.

And in truth, if Spence were to turn his Tottenham career around, it could be a big relief for the club, who would have one less position to strengthen this summer.

Although Archie Gray can provide cover at right-back, it seems as if Emerson Royal will eventually leave Tottenham, and will need replacing.

Ange Postecoglou praises Djed Spence but hints that he’ll still leave Tottenham

That being said, Postecoglou spoke about Spence’s performance and his future in the immediate aftermath of the game.

The Tottenham manager said that Spence ‘did well’ and will be treated the same as his other players until an offer arrives.

Speaking via , Postecoglou said: “Djed did well. He has had a tough couple of years. He is training with us and I think with all of the players they are here with us at the moment and when they are here with us I treat them as Tottenham players unless something suddenly changes.

“He was good tonight. Took his goal well, he contributed well and got an assist.”

A redeeming night for the 23-year-old, who evidently does have bags of ability.

However, Postecoglou’s words seem to suggest that an exit is still likely, sounding like Tottenham are just waiting for an approach.

But if pre-season transpires to be a shop window for Spence, rather than a chance at Spurs redemption, well he’s certainly not wasting his chance.

That being said, youngsters that are going nowhere any time soon: Gray and Lucas Bergvall, were exceptional against Hearts in the 5-1 win.

And Postecoglou has just been speaking about Gray’s performance too.
