Andy Halliday urges Rangers to sign striker, reportedly scouted by Celtic in 2019

hosted by Si Ferry that he reckons Dundee United goal machine Lawrence Shankland would be a good signing for Rangers this summer.

Shankland, 24, had enjoyed another stunning campaign in the Scottish Championship after swapping Ayr for Dundee United last summer. His 61 goals in 73 games for Ayr saw United come calling.

The two-time Scotland international has helped United gain promotion with a whopping 28 goals in 33 games. Back in September of the 2019-20 season, both Rangers and Celtic were scouting Shankland.

Halliday, who has been released by the Gers but remains an avid Rangers fan, told the Open Goal podcast that he believes Shankland would be good signing for Steven Gerrard’s side this summer.

“I would [take him at Rangers],” “He’s done it wherever he’s been and he looks like the type of boy that, if he gets chances, he’s going to score. If you’re at a bigger club you’re going to get more chances.

“He’s just got the knack for scoring goals and that’s something that’s hard to find. There’s hundreds of strikers that don’t even have that. I think no matter where he’s going to go, he’s going to score goals.”

TBR’s view – Shankland is the ideal Rangers signing

Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe remain the only Rangers options up front – with the permanent signing of Flo Kamberi looking unlikely. Defoe is now 37, while Morelos continues to be linked with European clubs.

A new striker, then, must be a necessity for Steven Gerrard. Shankland has proven he can score against Premiership sides, at international level, and on a regular basis. As Halliday says, he has that knack.
