that he is delighted to see Allan McGregor sign a new one-year deal at Rangers – but has suggested that had Rangers failed to win the title, he might not have chosen to extend his stay.
The Gers have qualified for the Champions League next season having toppled at Celtic and prevented them from securing 10 in a row. It was Rangers’ first title in 10 years, and the first bit of silverware under Steven Gerrard.
McGregor, 39, has been crucial to that. Clocking up 37 appearances this season, he has kept a whopping 20 clean sheets – conceding only 27 goals in that period of time. There is no surprises that Rangers wanted to keep him.
Halliday says he is delighted to see McGregor extend his stay until 2022, but hinted that after conversations with the Rangers icon, he does not believe that the goalkeeper would have stayed for another season if Celtic won the title.
“Class,” Halliday said. “If Rangers didn’t win the league, he would have chucked it – maybe heard that from him in a couple of conversations. Playing as well as he has, I thought he would be mad not to stay on for another year.

Certainly, keeping them on for another year is crucial to the way Rangers play – and benefits the Gers not only on the pitch. It helps Gerrard keep the Rangers standards high, given that Davis and McGregor have been there and done it.
Keeping McGregor on board gives Rangers another season in which they do not to spend big when it comes to replacing him. It will cost a pretty penny to bring in another player at Rangers that is at McGregor’s level.
