Andy Carroll posts on Instagram after winning Newcastle penalty against Tottenham
Andy Carroll has sympathised with Tottenham Hotspur on Instagram after securing a last-minute penalty that allowed Newcastle United to score deep into injury time and claim an unlikely point in north London.
Spurs dominated the clash in the capital, and were 1-0 up at half-time thanks to a Lucas Moura strike. Despite dominating possession and chances, Jose Mourinho’s side failed to double their lead – leaving Newcastle in with a shout late on.
Andy Carroll came on to the field of play from the substitute bench and it was a long ball into the box that sparked controversy. The former England striker headed the ball onto Eric Dier’s arm, with Dier none-the-wiser.
Dier handled with his back turned, and VAR ruled it was a penalty even though Dier had no chance of being able to react. The decision has sparked enormous criticism of the handball rule, and Carroll has reacted on Instagram.
Dier was not the only played to suffer – and Spurs not the only team – over the course of the weekend. Crystal Palace suffered a 2-1 defeat to Everton, after a Lucas Digne header hit Joel Ward’s arm, which was awarded as a penalty.
The late goal against Spurs has seen Mourinho’s side pick up just four points from a possible nine – leaving them in seventh place and two points behind Leeds United. They are next in action on Tuesday against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.
