Andros Townsend says five Liverpool players should have been in Team of the Year

Andros Townsend has posted a picture of his Team of the Year on Twitter, showing fans that he included five Liverpool players including Trent Alexander-Arnold and Gini Wijnaldum – much more than FIFA’s inclusion of just two.

The Best FIFA Football Awards took place in Milan on Monday night, announcing a side that only included Liverpool stars Alisson and Virgil van Dijk. Many believe a whole host of Liverpool and Manchester City stars should have been named.

Instead, Real Madrid stars Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Eden Hazard and Luka Modric, Juventus duo Matthias de Ligt and Cristiano Ronaldo, Barcelona duo Frenkie de Jong and Lionel Messi and PSG attacker Kylian Mbappe were picked.

Crystal Palace star Townsend posted a picture of his vote for the team of the year, which included Liverpool quintet Alisson, van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold, Wijnaldum and Andy Robertson. He also included Tottenham’s Harry Kane and two Manchester City players.

TBR’s view – Which Liverpool players deserved a spot?

The Team of the Year does not include a right-back and it is clear to many that England internatinal Alexander-Arnold deserved a spot. Robertson was also excellent last season, and he perhaps deserved a place above Marcelo.

Sadio Mane and Mo Salah also could have deserved a place, while Manchester City stars Raheem Sterling, Aymeric Laporte and Raheem Sterling were also worthy of a shout.
