Andros Townsend gives verdict on Tottenham links with Mauricio Pochettino
Andros Townsend has claimed it’s “too soon” for Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino to make a Tottenham return amid speculation.
, Spurs are in discussions with their ex-boss about a possible return to north London to take their vacant managerial position.
The report states that the idea of a move back to Spurs just 18 months after his sacking would appeal to Pochettino, albeit he’s still got one year remaining on his deal with French giants PSG.
Pochettino, who’s got a 52 per cent win record during his managerial career in England, is a talented coach who is still adored by Spurs fans.
He started his managerial career at Espanyol and is currently at PSG. However, English audiences are very familiar of him from his time in charge at Southampton and Spurs.
Townsend feels that this summer may be too soon for Pochettino to make a Spurs return. He’s suggested the same problems he had with the squad would still exist.
“If we were having this conversation in a year’s time, I would believe it. I felt the way Pochettino left, it was kind of on good terms,” Townsend told .
“Daniel Levy and he both kind of said they will go their separate ways and will see what happens in the future.
“I think it may be a year too soon. Pochettino hasn’t done what he wanted to do at PSG.
“Pochettino left because he asked for a rebuild that wasn’t given to him. Pochettino knew they were going to be 14th. He said after the Champions League final ‘we need a rebuild. This club, this team has come to the end of the line. I need a rebuild’.
“I think he told six or seven players he wanted them to go. When you do that and on July 1 they are still there, it’s never going to work out. You’ve got players who know the manager doesn’t want them there.”
Pochettino would need to rebuild Tottenham squad
Townend’s comments are bang on the money.
If Pochettino makes a stunning return to Tottenham, he will be dealing with the majority of the squad that were there when ultimately he was dismissed in 2019.
It felt like his first spell in charge came to a natural conclusion after five-and-a-half years at the helm. He would definitely need a transfer budget to start a fresh project with a new group of players.
