Andrea Berta thanked Viktor Gyokeres for his efforts to join Arsenal following several weeks of back-and-forth negotiations with Sporting CP.
Berta was the first person to greet the striker following his arrival in London via private jet and one of the first things he said was: “Thank you for your efforts.”
The 27-year-old went to great lengths to ensure his move to the Emirates Stadium eventually went through, despite resistance from the Portuguese club.
Gyokeres refused to train with Sporting, which frustrated them, but president Frederico Varandas insisted their asking price would not change.
In a bid to bring down the costs of the deal, Gyokeres offered to reduce his salary demands, having agreed a deal worth £200k-per-week with Arsenal.
Mikel Merino also gave Gyokeres a warm welcome as the striker finally had his chance to meet his new Arsenal teammates.
The former Brighton man has joined training with Arteta’s side, who are currently out on tour in Asia.
Gyokeres could make his first appearance for the North London club against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday in a pre-season friendly.
