‘Amazing talent’: Gerrard says one Villa player has been getting better and better in training

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has lauded Emiliano Buendia after he won the club’s Player of the Month award.

The 25-year-old initially struggled at Villa Park following his £38million move from Norwich last summer.

However, Buendia has truly blossomed under the tutelage of Gerrard in recent months.

The attacking ace has registered one goal and two assists in his last seven Premier League appearances for Villa.

Buendia was especially impressive just prior to the top-flight winter break.

He delivered man-of-the-match performances against Manchester United and Everton.

As well as winning Villa’s POTM award for January, he also made his debut for Argentina last week.

Now, Buendia will be hoping to pick up where he left off in claret-and-blue against Leeds.

And Gerrard, speaking to the Villa , believes the best is yet to come from the big-money attacking ace.

“We believe he’s had a fantastic month,” said Gerrard. “All the players needed time to adapt to us and the way we want to play.

“The good thing for Emi is we believe this style, shape and what we’re trying to do is tailormade for him and his own style. We feel it’s a really good match.

“He’s seen that early on and we’ve had real buy-in from him. He’s a tenacious little character and player, he’s got amazing talent and he’s got stronger and stronger with each training session.

“He deserved to be Player of the Month from a club point of view, and we expect him to get better and better.”

“We want to give him a style of play which brings out the best in him”

Buendia arrived from Norwich in the summer, two months before Villa sold Jack Grealish to Manchester City for £100million.

Gerrard, however, doesn’t want any comparisons between Buendia and the former Villa captain.

“We are not comparing him to Jack Grealish,” the quotes him as saying.

“We’re not looking back, we’re only looking forward to support him and give him an environment and a culture to thrive in. We want to give him a style of play which brings out the best in him.”
