‘Amazing’, ‘really stepped up’: Pundit raves about Celtic-linked 24-year-old who ‘couldn’t stop scoring’

A player who was linked with Celtic in January and described reported interest from the Hoops as “flattering” has been praised by Parkhead alumni Mark Wilson in the .

Motherwell midfielder Liam Donnelly has enjoyed a great second season at Fir Park and was linked with the Bhoys by in January.

The Northern Irishman subsequently told the : “I saw the links with Celtic, but they are just rumours. I don’t think there is too much in it.

“It’s flattering. It’s nice when you are linked with other teams. It shows you are doing all right and performing well.”

Since the January transfer window slammed shut, Donnelly’s form has gone off the boil somewhat, with just one goal in the league, as well as missing Well’s last two matchday squads through suspension.

With football now suspended, Wilson has gone through all the Scottish Premiership teams and picked out who he feels have been their best players so far this season, with Donnelly making the cut for Well.

“To be asked to play further forward in a more advanced role this season he’s taken to it really well,” Wilson wrote in the .

“He had an amazing start to the season where he couldn’t stop scoring but he’s been consistent and played a lot of games and really stepped up to the plate in the absence of David Turnbull.”

Even though Donnelly’s form tailed off in February and wasn’t available for his side’s last two games prior to the suspension, Donnelly has nonetheless done enough to be deemed their best player so far this season, according to Wilson.

The versatile 24-year-old, who can also operate in defence, has done superbly since being pushed up into midfield, and as such, it’s not surprising that links with Celtic emerged in the January transfer window.

Realistically though, does Donnelly have what it takes to dislodge the current midfield crop in the best team in the country, particularly bearing in mind that he’s only properly taken to playing in midfield this season?
