Ally McCoist’s commentary concern over Joe Worrall and Jon Flanagan should be heeded

Rangers played out a hard-fought 0-0 draw against La Liga side Villarreal last night. The result was fantastic for Rangers and well deserved after playing much of the game with 10 men after a poor red card decision over Daniel Candeias.

Rangers did ride their luck at times, which is to be expected against a Spanish top-flight side with only 10 men. Allan McGregor made a couple of stunning one-on-one saves with defensive errors creeping into the Rangers side at Ibrox. 

One area where Rangers looked to be struggling was down the left. It was an issue noticed by former Rangers manager and player Ally McCoist on BT Sport’s co-commentary.

Whilst the 355-goal ex-Rangers hero may not be capable of pronouncing Alfredo Morelos he did notice how Joe Worrall and Jon Flanagan were struggling to put together any form of defensive or offensive chemistry.

Passes between the pair were often awry and on one occasion it nearly resulted in a goal, were it not for McGregor’s heroics.

There was certainly a lack of balance and understanding between the two players. Perhaps it is the fact both are naturally right-footed, but the English pair looked like strangers at times.

Fortunately, in a singular fashion, the pair put in decent displays with good clearances, blocks and tackles from the pair.

But if they are to feature more regularly together a better understanding needs to be developed by Steven Gerrard between the two Rangers players.
