Ally McCoist urges caution for Rangers over reported target Martin Skrtel

Rangers legend Ally McCoist is concerned about the club’s reported swoop for Martin Skrtel.

that Steven Gerrard has launched a third bid to land the 34-year-old, who is a free agent after winding down his contract at Fenerbahce.

Apparently ‘positive preliminary talks’ have been held, suggesting that a move could genuinely be on.

The link has prompted a mixed reaction from Rangers fans, but in the eyes of the club’s former striker McCoist, the proposed move would be a risk.

Referencing a former Ger, : “Whether he’s still got it…I’d hope so.

“Rangers signed Bruno Alves before, a top, top-class centre-half but that didn’t really work out.”

TBR’s view

Skrtel on a free transfer is perhaps worth considering – if Steven Gerrard can convince his old teammate to play for considerably less than the reported £60,000-a-week he was earning at Fenerbahce.

He may be 34, but Skrtel could still be of great use for Rangers.

The vastly experienced star has never really been the quickest across the ground so can’t have lost much mobility as he moves into his mid-30s.

McCoist is right to question the move as an older Alves arrived at Ibrox with a big reputation and didn’t pull up trees. Gareth McAuley didn’t do much last season either.

That said though, David Weir and Clint Hill did well as veterans for the club.
