Ally McCoist ‘surprised’ £70m player didn’t leave after being linked with Tottenham and Man City move

Although Tottenham Hotspur delivered some excellent signings this summer, it still feels as if an opportunity was slightly missed.

Dominic Solanke improves Tottenham’s starting eleven straight away, but otherwise there’s no other immediate boost.

Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall both have incredible potential, but they’re almost bonus signings in terms of competing for the top four or beyond this season, they’ll contribute, but they won’t suddenly catapult Ange Postecoglou’s project.

Given their strong financial position, when a lot of their rivals needed to be more mindful of PSR this summer, Spurs perhaps should have repeated their Solanke trick in midfield.

And in terms of their ideal candidate for the job, Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze had an active release clause all summer long, an option that must have been considered.

Tottenham may have made a mistake passing up on Eberechi Eze’s release clause

Speaking on , Ally McCoist responded to Steve Parish’s recent comments about the surprising lack of interest in Eze this summer.

The Palace chairman expected Eze to be targeted by several top sides this summer, but that didn’t end up being the case.

Tottenham wanted to sign Eze, but it appears as if the concerted effort was vetoed.

Sharing his thoughts on the situation, McCoist said: “Actually, yes. I would agree with Steve Parish. I think he’s an outstanding talent.

“There was a period where it looked as though Guehi was leaving, Andersen was leaving, Olise was away, Eze had a question mark.

“At one point they were losing everybody. But I have enjoyed watching Palace recently, over the last 18 months or so.

“I am a little bit surprised [he didn’t leave] but delighted for the Palace fans.”

James Maddison needs better competition at Tottenham

After letting Giovani Lo Celso go on deadline day, Spurs only have James Maddison available as a number 10 right now.

Perhaps Postecoglou is happy to play without a 10 were Maddison missing, but it’s something of a surprise that the club haven’t sought better competition for the Englishman.

Maddison has started the season fairly well, but still isn’t hitting the heights he once did when he first moved to north London.

And although Dejan Kulusevski is incredibly versatile, he’s not about to push Maddison to the bench.

Daniel Levy may have missed a trick this summer, but perhaps Tottenham’s pursuit of Eze isn’t over just yet
