Ally McCoist says Ange Postecoglou is doing something at Tottenham that’s so ‘strange’

Tottenham Hotspur have had something of an up and down season so far.

One week, Spurs look unplayable, the next, they look all over the place.

Ange Postecoglou hasn’t quite got a firm grip on his squad this season, and speaking on TalkSPORT, Ally McCoist has outlined one thing he’s finding rather strange about Postecoglou at Tottenham right now.

Indeed, McCoist says he’s been somewhat surprised by how James Maddison has been used by Postecoglou this season, stating that it’s strange how the midfielder keeps coming in and out of the team and being substituted.

Ally McCoist says Ange Postecoglou’s use of James Maddison is strange

McCoist shared his verdict on how Postecoglou is using Maddison this season.

Maddison has been criticised for his performances this season, and he’s been taken out of the team on a number of occasions.

Despite his patchy form, McCoist says he can’t get his head around why Maddison is being used in this way.

“Does it surprise you? It surprises me that I’m not sure he’s 100% sold on Maddison at this moment in time. When he starts he generally comes off and he didn’t play, he came off the bench with five or 10 minutes to go against Ipswich. It’s a strange one that isn’t it? McCoist said.

James Maddison stats this season

McCoist says it’s strange that Maddison is being used in this way, and when you look at the stats, it’s easy to understand why.

Maddison is scoring and assisting at a solid rate, so it is strange to see Postecoglou leaving him out of the team so much recently.

Of course, this all stems back to the game against West Ham.

Tottenham struggled against the Hammers in the first-half back in October, and Maddison was subbed at half-time.

Maddison was subbed for tactical reasons, and Spurs went on to win that game 4-1.

The impact Pape Sarr made during that game clearly stuck with Postecoglou, and, since then, he’s been starting more and more, while Maddison has been relegated to the bench.

Maddison wasn’t happy when he was subbed against West Ham, and it’s hard to imagine he’ll be best pleased about his current role at Tottenham.

It will certainly be interesting to see how this situation develops in the coming weeks.
