Rangers veteran has gone a season too far, his form has gone badly downhill this season – TBR View

Allan McGregor has been a great servant to Rangers Football Club, but it appears it may be a season too far for the veteran.
Allan McGregor has made over for Rangers. He is a fan favourite and has earned legendary status. He has given Rangers fans some great memories in big moments, particularly in European nights and the 55th title winning season. His saves against Werder Bremen and more recently Porto and Slavia Prague will forever be remembered.
A year too much for McGregor
Nonetheless, this season he has sadly looked his age and has some errors that have cost Rangers points in a vital season. He has 55 shots on target, saving 40 of them. He has conceded 17 goals in 20 games, 0.85% of shots against him as opposed to Old Firm opposition Joe Hart who has conceded 0.58%. Yes, the defending in front of Allan Mcgregor need to be better but questions also need to be asked of his capability to continue as a Rangers number one.
His failure to command his box from crosses has put Rangers defence under severe pressure. He is often rooted to his line, showing a reluctance to come for corners, possibly after his blunder against Hearts at Ibrox. Teams are now capitalising on it, flooding the six yard box and delivering inswinging crosses. His display at Ross County was not one that would have happened last season. It appears age has finally caught up on him. He has always been a great shot-stopper but his commanding and distribution is lacking.
McGregor’s contract expires in the summer, and he will likely retire but if he wants to retire as a league winner then he may need to step aside for the remainder of the season.
Jon Mclaughlin has been an able when called upon, he has better distribution than Allan, and allows Rangers to start attacks quicker, he is also a decent enough shot-stopper. Jon signed a new deal in January, extending his stay until 2024, suggesting he is ready to take over the goalkeeping spot.
Rangers should sign a new number one, possibly Siegrist – TBR View
Rangers were linked with Benjamin Siegrist in January, but a move failed to materialise. He is out of contract in the summer and his signing could prove to be a shrewd bit of business.
The Swiss has SPFL experience and is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the league. He is 30 years old, a decade younger than the current Rangers number one. He has 25 goals in 23 games, a decent return for an SPFL keeper outside the Old Firm.
Siegrist has faced 93 shots, almost double the amount McGregor has, saving 70, registering a 75.3% save accuracy, the third highest in the league.
Legendary keeper but age has caught up
Allan McGregor has been a great player for Rangers, and was integral to the success of the club, playing a monumental part in Rangers 55th league title win. Rangers fans were delighted when he signed a new deal to stay on this season. Although, in hindsight, it now appears he should have retired on the high of last season. He will always be fondly remembered as a legend. One of the best shot-stoppers for Rangers but sadly age has caught Allan this season, that isn’t a shot he can stop but this is a season in which Rangers can ill afford to show sentiment.
