All of a sudden there’s a real chance for Reece James at Sunderland

Sunderland full-back Reece James has a real chance now to stake his claim in the first-team.

, and Bryan Oviedo picked up a silly red card against Peterborough during the 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light.

James joined the club on a one-year deal this summer after being released by Championship club Wigan Athletic.

The defender picked up a groin injury in pre-season shortly after joining, which hindered his integration slightly.

He actually played with a tear against Darlington, which he later admitted regretting.

He has made five appearances for the first team since his move, including two starts, but he could be in for a real chance now.

James to lay down a marker?

James has the chance to make the left-back spot his own.

He came on against the Posh, replacing Josh Maja, but fared unconvincingly and was at fault for Peterborough’s second equaliser.

He must step up his game if he is afforded the chances by manager Jack Ross, which he should get given the lack of other options for the position.

The former Manchester United prospect might not get a better chance to stake his claim than this, and has to take his opportunity.

Oviedo is clearly good enough to play in the Championship at least.

He may well become a transfer target for a team from higher up the Football League.

James needs to provide the reassurance that there is life after the Costa Rican, if anything.
