Alfie Mawson’s injury uncertainty underscores Fulham’s need to sign Gary Cahill

In Claudio Ranieri’s pre-match press conference, the Fulham manager declined to give an update on the fitness of Alfie Mawson ahead of the Burnley match.

The uncertainty surrounding the defender’s fitness shows the Whites need to buy Gary Cahill and strengthen their central defensive options in January.

Mawson mysteriously was substituted during halftime of Fulham’s match against Huddersfield Town back on 29 December.

Replaced by Maxime le Marchand, it surfaced after the game that Mawson had suffered a knee injury — a worrying sign considering Mawson’s injury history.

Yet more than a week and a half after the match, Ranieri still refused to set a timeline for Mawson’s recovery.

“Mawson is being assessed – there’s no prognosis yet,” Ranieri said in comments reported by .

As Fulham remain in the dark over Mawson’s injury, it reveals how desperately the Whites need reinforcements in the transfer window.

Chelsea centre-half Gary Cahill has been heavily with the Whites all January, with the 33-year-old representing an experienced presence that would slot in perfectly as one of Fulham’s three centre-backs.

Even before Mawson’s injury, Fulham required significant investment to improve their defence, yet the increasing uncertainty surrounding Mawson’s arrival underscores the need for the Whites to sign Cahill.
