Alex Neil says Andre Green faces major challenge at Preston after recovering from injury

Preston North End manager Alex Neil has highlighted the challenge awaiting Andre Green once he recovers from injury, .

Neil confirmed that Green is currently out with a toe injury and he has had injections to help him. But this has only been a problem since the start of November. Prior to that, he was just not getting into the team.

Preston are flying high in the Championship and currently sit second over the international break. With his current starting line-up leading a promotion charge, Neil has been unable to find spaces for a number of fringe players.

Green, who is on a season-long loan from Aston Villa is one of those players. The 21-year-old faces a battle to convince Neil to include him once his injury concerns are over.

Neil said (): “Andre is in a position which a lot of the other lads who are not really featuring, are in. Who do you take out of the team to put him in?

“At the moment Andre has got a problem with his big toe. He’s got arthritis which means he’d had a few injections in it, so at the moment he’s not currently fit. However, that’s only been for the last couple of weeks.”

TBR’s view

Green dropped down a division hoping to get some regular playing time. But Preston’s attack has been so lethal that the young winger has barely got a look-in.

At this rate, Green is not only fighting for his Preston spot but also his long-term Villa future. He needs to convince Dean Smith he is good enough. Injuries have held him back in the past and it sadly looks like this could be a recurring theme this season, too.
