Alex Mowatt finally showing the form that saw him win Leeds United’s Player of the Year
Barnsley appear to be in the hunt for promotion from League One this season. The Tykes are currently fourth in the league after a good start to the season under Daniel Stendel.
Yesterday, they picked up a difficult win against Bristol Rovers at Oakwell. The result came after a well-taken goal from Barnsley midfielder Alex Mowatt.
Finally, the 23-year-old is looking like the player Leeds United thought he might become.
Playing in a more defensive role in the heart of midfield he has been in fine form for Barnsley this season. Mowatt has played nearly every minute of Barnsley’s campaign so far this season and is becoming popular with the fanbase in Yorkshire.
Leeds United fans know he has talent. Alex Mowatt broke onto the scene in 2013 and the youngster looked like being a future Leeds star. In 2014-15 he was the club’s player of the year and
Leeds managed to keep Mowatt but his form dipped dramatically. By 2017 he was not in Garry Monk’s first-team picture. With his contract expiring, he was sold to Leeds’ Yorkshire rivals for a cut-price fee,
After struggling in his first six months at the club, Mowatt was loaned out to Oxford United last season and Leeds felt they had rightly got rid of a dud.
However, Mowatt is now looking comfortable and perhaps near his best form and fitness.
Leeds will not necessarily feel they are missing Mowatt. The club is currently second in the Championship without him and it is hard to see how he would have fitted in under Marcelo Bielsa.
However, Leeds fans will be pleased to see one of their former prospects finally putting in the displays many had hoped from him.
