Alex Mowatt desperate to ruin Leeds promotion party with Barnsley

that he is desperate to go to Elland Road and snatch all three points from Leeds United on Thursday night – with the Whites needing just four points to gain promotion.

A late Pablo Hernandez goal against Swansea City meant Leeds need just four points from their remaining three games to end a 16-year wait for Premier League football, something they have lacked since 2004.

They can secure three of those points against local rivals Barnsley on Thursday night, with the Whites looking to do the double over Mowatt’s side – after winning 2-0 at Oakwell. But Barnsley have plenty to play for, too.

Mowatt, who broke through the Leeds academy and clocked up 125 games for the Whites, is now Barnsley’s captain and he underlined how determined he is to go to Elland Road and get three points in their bid to avoid the drop.

“It’s a big Yorkshire derby, we respect Leeds; they’re top of the league,” “But we’re going there for three points. We’re a young side, we’re fit and with our high-press we hope to catch Leeds out.

“The belief is still there in our side. We’ve had positive results since the restart, it’s not like we’ve struggled in the last six games. It’s not over, and I can’t wait to go to Elland Road and get that result for us.”

Leeds could have had the chance to confirm promotion with a win had Brentford not beaten Preston on Wednesday night, but Ollie Watkins scored the only goal of the game to secure a 1-0 victory – with Leeds fans impressed.

The Whites will have to do it without Kalvin Phillips, who has been ruled out for more than a month with a knee injury. Ben White is expected to replace him, and Gaetano Berardi should fill in at centre-back.
