Alderweireld’s mistake proves that Tottenham should replace him

Toby Alderweireld made a huge defensive error to gift PSV Eindhoven a lead in the Champions League on Wednesday. It was a must win game for Tottenham, but they failed and that leaves the club in a difficult situation in the group.

The Belgian international has been re-integrated into the first-team and he has had a prominent role since the injury to Jan Vertonghen. However, his mistake underlined why it could be time for Tottenham to move on.

Despite his return to the first-team, Alderweireld hasn’t returned to the high level that he displayed when first joining Tottenham. He has lacked confidence on the ball, which led to his mistake against PSV.

Furthermore, he hasn’t been as dominant at the back. His performances in the Champions League have been a big area of concern.

Tottenham are facing a crucial decision when it comes to the future of the centre-back, as he is pushing for an improved deal. It may be a better move for Spurs to let him leave and identify a replacement.

The club want to compete at the very highest level and have ambitions to do that over the coming seasons. Alderweireld is showing that he may not have the quality to continue growing with the team.
