Alasdair Gold has shared what Tottenham Hotspur supporters were signing about Matty Cash at Villa Park on Sunday.
It’s fair to say there is no love lost between Spurs supporters and Aston Villa’s Matty Cash.
Back in April 2022, former Tottenham wing-back Matt Doherty picked up a serious knee injury at Villa after a robust tackle from Cash.
It led to Doherty missing the remainder of the campaign after he had just started to find form under Antonio Conte.
Cash then came under fire from Tottenham supporters once again this season after injuring Rodrigo Bentancur back in November.
The Uruguayan had just returned to the starting XI following a nine-month absence due to an ACL injury. The Villa full-back’s tackle led to Bentancur missing a few weeks of action with an ankle injury.
The Villains also went on to win that game 2-1 after Tottenham had dominated the early exchanges while Bentancur was still on the pitch.
And as Spurs exacted revenge on Sunday by picking up a statement 4-0 win in the Midlands, their supporters were keen to remind Cash of the score at Villa Park.
What Tottenham fans sang to Cash at Villa Park
Speaking on the podcast, Alasdair Gold shared what Spurs’ supporters were singing to Cash during Sunday’s game.
“Villa Park, it can be a very noisy place and they made it a very quiet place,” the Football.London journalist said.
“All you could hear was the Spurs fans for long periods singing, ‘Matty, Matty, what’s the score?’ towards Matty Cash.”
The most important thing from Tottenham’s point of view on Sunday was picking up a crucial three points. It leaves them just two behind Villa with a game in hand.
But you can understand why the Spurs supporters were keen to poke fun at Cash after what’s happened in previous fixtures.
It was refreshing to hear some harmless fun from the Tottenham away end too after a minority of fans on social media overstepped the line following Bentancur’s injury back in November.
