Alasdair Gold says one Tottenham player has visibly grown in confidence under Antonio Conte

Alasdair Gold has waxed lyrical about Tottenham Hotspur right wing-back Matt Doherty in wake of his return to form.

The football.london correspondent has noticed how the Spurs defender has visibly grown in confidence in recent weeks.

Doherty joined Tottenham in 2020 from Wolves, but for a while it looked as though it wasn’t going to happen for him.

Even when Nuno Espirito Santo became Spurs manager, the 30-year-old continued to struggle.

Admittedly, Doherty has always excelled as a right wing-back, but he was often deployed in a back four.

Now, with Antonio Conte in charge, Tottenham play with three at the back and wing-backs, Doherty’s preferred position.

And the Republic of Ireland international has looked superb in recent weeks.

Doherty shone against Leeds and Everton, and even against Middlesbrough, he still put in a decent display.

Against the Toffees, he arguably put in his best performance in a Spurs shirt.

He brilliantly set up two goals for Harry Kane on Monday as Tottenham thrashed Everton 5-0.

And Gold, speaking on his , admitted he was over the moon with how Doherty is faring now.

“I’m so happy for Matt Doherty,” he said.

“He was excellent, he was really, really good, and you can feel that he’s starting to feel like he’s contributed.

‘You can feel like he can now be a bit more of a presence on social media and you can see him kind of shouting and celebrating with the fans and stuff.

“It’s not that he felt like a fraud or anything but by his own admission he’s still – even out of his normal position he wasn’t showing what he could do.

“(Now) you could just see that different player, confidence does that… you’re seeing a man who’s grown in confidence.”
