Alan Smith tells Arsenal to consider signing Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa

Former Arsenal striker and regular pundit, Alan Smith, has said that the Gunners would be better suited making a move for Ollie Watkins, rather than Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Arsenal are being linked with a move for a new centre-forward. It comes as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang continues to be isolated from the squad, and Alexandre Lacazette being yet to sign a new contract.

A host of players have been mentioned and linked already. Dusan Vlahovic is the big name, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been touted more than once. Indeed, we only reported this month how Calvert-Lewin was said to be at the top of Edu’s wanted list for January.

However, according to Smith, ‘DCL’ might not be the ideal signing. Instead, he believes the Gunners should be looking more towards someone like Aston Villa star, Ollie Watkins.

“I wouldn’t say Calvert-Lewin is an ideal fit for Arsenal. In many ways he’s an old-fashioned centre-forward and he loves balls being swung into the box and there’s not many better at getting his head to the ball and attacking it,” Smith told .

“In terms of his movement, maybe Ollie Watkins is a striker I’d have thought Arsenal would look at, but are they looking at him? I’m not sure Steven Gerrard would be letting him go in a hurry. However, that kind of mobile central striker that will really threaten in behind defenders, perhaps, is a bit more like it.”

Watkins has already impressed his new manager, Steven Gerrard. The former Liverpool skipper his striker for his ‘powerful’ play at Man City. He has five Premier League goals to his name this season.

TBR’s View: Watkins Perfect For Arsenal But Villa In No Position To Sell

Unless Arsenal are going to pay ridiculous money, this one won’t be happening. Villa paid £33m for the striker and they won’t want to be losing him any time soon.

Of course, Watkins would be brilliant for Arsenal. Smith makes a good point about his movement. But in terms of actually landing him, you’d think it almost impossible for the Gunners.
