Alan Shearer’s comments on Newcastle United target Edinson Cavani from January
Newcastle United’s seemingly impending takeover by a Saudi-backed consortium has seen the Magpies linked with a host of big names in recent days.
one potential marquee signing Newcastle are eyeing is Uruguayan forward Edinson Cavani. The report claims Newcastle have been in touch with the player’s agent about a potential move, with the striker out of contract at PSG this summer.
Cavani would certainly bring goal-scoring expertise to the club. The 33-year-old has scored 50 goals in 116 games for his nation and has scored 200 goals in 300 games in the French capital.

One other famous goalscorer, who did so in the black-and-white of Newcastle United, was Alan Shearer.
He is clearly a fan of Cavani’s as heback in January when Cavani was being linked with a move to Chelsea.
“When you look at Cavani… in terms of experience absolutely and in terms of goal-wise absolutely.
“I think he could be ideal for this Chelsea team for a year or two.”
Clearly, Shearer felt Cavani could still do a job in the Premier League.
Undoubtedly, Cavani would be an eye-catching grab for Newcastle United, despite his advancing years. Cavani has seen his playing time diminish rapidly at the Parcs des Princes this season, because of injury and his impending contract expiration.
But he still has seven goals in 22 games, many of which have been from the bench. Considering Cavani is on a £360,000-a-week at PSG, Newcastle will simply have to weigh up whether the risk is worth the reward.
