Alan Shearer says Liverpool have a player whose ‘confidence is shot’ right now
Liverpool drew 2-2 with Aston Villa on Wednesday evening, and the big story out of this game surrounded Darwin Nunez.
Darwin Nunez missed an absolute sitter against Villa as Liverpool dropped points and the gap in the title race closed ever so slightly.
Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
1 | 26 | 18 | 7 | 1 | 62 | 26 | 36 | 61 | |
2 | 25 | 15 | 8 | 2 | 51 | 22 | 29 | 53 | |
3 | 25 | 14 | 5 | 6 | 41 | 29 | 12 | 47 | |
4 | 25 | 13 | 5 | 7 | 52 | 35 | 17 | 44 |
Nunez missed a serious sitter against Villa, and, sadly, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen this from the Uruguayan.
Indeed, Nunez’s finishing has been criticised before, and speaking on The Rest is Football, Alan Shearer has been discussing the forward.
Shearer says that Nunez’s confidence looks shot at the moment, and that his finishing always looks erratic.

Alan Shearer says Darwin Nunez’s confidence is shot
Shearer spoke about Nunez and his current issues.
According to the pundit, Nunez isn’t a natural finisher, and to make matters worse, he’s seriously lacking confidence right now.
Nunez has been linked with a Liverpool exit recently, and he could well be on his way out this summer.
“Yeah. You see him miss the number of chances that he does, unfortunately, for him and for Liverpool, but he’s never going to be a natural finisher,’ Shearer said.
“Yeah, very erratic. Very erratic. He never looks composed when he’s about to have his shot or confident, and he always looks off balance.
“I suppose when your confidence is shot, then you are off balance, I guess. But yeah, what an absolute sitter, unfortunately.”
Darwin Nunez’s Benfica scoring record
It is strange to see Nunez struggling so much in front of goal over the past three years, because when he was at Benfica he was scoring for fun.
Indeed, Nunez had a remarkable goalscoring record over in Portugal, but, for some reason, that hasn’t translated over to the Premier League.
Games | Goals | Assists | |
---|---|---|---|
Darwin Nunez final season at Benfica | 28 | 26 | 4 |
The size of the goals hasn’t changed, and Nunez is still getting tons of chances, but, for some reason, he just can’t seem to finish these days.
As Shearer says, this is clearly a confidence issue, and it’s something we’ve seen on a number of occasions in the past.
Timo Werner used to score tons of goals in Germany, but ever since arriving in England, Werner has been terrible in front of goal
Werner’s confidence has been an issue in recent times, and Nunez is in the same sort of position at Liverpool now.
