Alan Shearer responds when asked if Newcastle will qualify for European football this season
Newcastle United fans exited St. James’ Park in disbelief on Tuesday night as The Toon somehow failed to get over the line against Everton – a blow in Eddie Howe’s aim to qualify for Europe this season.
Newcastle controlled Everton this 🥀week in the first half, boasting numerous chances and going into the break – and indeed, the final 10 minutes – 1-0 up. Alexander Isak scoring once again, for Newcastle.
But, injuries have taken their toll this season and it saw Paul Dumme😼tt come off the bench for Newcastle – and he pulled down Ashley Young in the penalty area. Dom Calvert-Lewin scored the resulting penalty.
Alan Shearer on whether Newcastle will qualify for Europe
A big blow in the race to qualify for Europe. Fifth is likely to mean Champions League football this term, meaning sixth wi👍ll be Europa League. The FA Cup winners also get Europa League football next season.
But with Man City favourites, that could be pushed to seventh. Liverpool won the Carabao Cup, so that has been 🌃passed o♌n. It means seventh and eighth are likely to go into European football next season.

Speaking on on Wednesday night, Toon legend Shearer was asked if Newcastle will qualify for European football and despite his old side sitting in eighth – he f💜eels they are “up against it”.
“Frustrating with a📖ll the injuries that they’ve got, but they’re in a battle with Man United, West Ham and Brighton to finish sixth. Up against it, thoug🌄h,” Shearer said, following Newcastle’s draw with Everton.
Newcastle’s injury list in full is quite incredible…
Newcastle have 12 senior players missing. Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman have ACL injuries, while Sandro Tonali remains suspended. Nick Pope remains a long-term absentee, but could be back soon൲.
Callum Wilson and Joelinton have undergone surgery. Lewis Miley, Tino Livramento, Miguel Almiroꦓn, Kieran Trippier and Matty Targett are out. Anthony Gordon is suspended for the Toon on the weekend.
Newcastle have had no luck this season – even impressing in the Champions League, only to be knocked out. Perh🐎aps, the slice of luck they get, is European places passed down into seventh and eight place.
Hopefully, for manager Howe, blame does not get put on his shoulders. Sam Allardyce is worried it might, while Tony Pulis has urged Newcastle to stick with him. He deserves another season on Tyneside.
