Alan Shearer reacts to Fernandez clash with Jota in Liverpool draw with Newcastle

Alan Shearer that Federico Fernandez was fortunate to only get booked following a clash with Diogo Jota during Liverpool’s draw with Newcastle United on Saturday.

The headlines were dominated by what went on in the final stages of the clash at Anfield. Newcastle were denied a late equaliser due to a controversial handball decision.

However, that would not be the last of the drama. Joe Willock’s strike moments later did stand and the points were shared.

But Wilson’s ruled out goal was not the only moment of controversy during the game.

Fernandez was booked after just 15 minutes after catching Jota with his elbow after going up to win the ball in the air.

It certainly appeared to be an unnecessary challenge from the Newcastle defender. And Shearer suggested that he could have had few complaints had he ultimately been shown the red card.

“I think he’s fortunate in the way the game is today,” . “He leads with his elbow, so yeah, I think he’s fortunate.

“He leads with it there, and then sort of brushes it into him so yeah, I think he’s fortunate to get away with that.”

You could certainly understand why Liverpool fans may be infuriated by Fernandez only being booked.

Once again, the consistency in the decision-making has been completely lacking this season.

Later on Saturday, Fabian Balbuena was sent off after clearing the ball in West Ham’s clash with Chelsea. Admittedly, he did catch Ben Chilwell, but it was clearly accidental with Balbuena in the process of kicking the ball up the field.

Fernandez on the other hand, does appear to increase the force he uses as he makes contact with Jota.

And had supporters been asked to pick out the red card from the two incidents, it is very difficult to imagine too many fans would have opted to send Balbuena off.
