Alan Shearer raves about ‘excellent’ Southampton star Alex McCarthy

Alan Shearer used his piece to rave about Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy for his performance in the 1-1 draw against Wolves on Monday.

The 30-year-old custodian produced several decent saves as the Saints maintained their decent start to the 2020/21 campaign under Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Southampton finished 11th last year and after keeping the nucleus of their squad together in the summer, they have kicked on once again this term.

Shearer knows all about turning out for Southampton after starting his career on the south coast. He was delighted with the performance of McCarthy on Monday as he once again showcased his talents.

“He was excellent and made four outstanding saves to earn his team a point.”

McCarthy has been at Southampton for four years now and is finally established as the club’s number one goalkeeper.

He has been the bedrock of some impressive defending this season under Hasenhuttl and deserves praise for his performances.

McCarthy is an ever-present in the team, keeping four clean sheets from his 10 outings in all competitions.

In total, he has played 91 times for the Saints and is quickly becoming a fan favourite for his work between the posts.

McCarthy earns at St Mary’s Stadium and is among a plethora of English goalkeepers currently playing well in the Premier League.

Hasenhuttl hasn’t attracted the very best players to Southampton but what he has done is built a foundation of hard work and character.

His team are tough to beat and on current form, you wouldn’t be betting against them sneaking into European contention this season.

He will hope McCarthy’s form continues to be so impressive in goal.
