Alan Shearer names two Newcastle players who were ‘superb’ and ‘immense’ vs Southampton
It was far from smooth sailing for Newcastle United in their Premier League opener as they were made to fight tooth and nail for three points against Southampton.
Eddie Howe’s side had just 22 percent possession against the Saints for their 1-0 win at St James’ Park.
A first-half red card for Fabian Schar gave Newcastle United a huge mountain to climb but Joelinton broke the deadlock just before the break and the hosts defended resolutely to kick-start their 2024-25 campaign with a win.
It wasn’t a pretty start to the season for the Toon but they will travel to Bournemouth on Sunday looking to make it two wins from two.
Troy Deeney was full of praise for Dan Burn after his “monster” performance against Southampton, and Alan Shearer has now named two players he thinks stood out.

Alan Shearer praises ‘superb’ Newcastle United duo
Going down to 10 men meant that Newcastle’s star-studded front line were starved of chances against Southampton.
But it did give a chance for Newcastle’s combative players to dig deep and churn out a result.
Speaking to , Shearer picked out Burn and Joelinton for praise.
“You have to get off to a good start – you have to win. Then you can pick the bones out of it later,” he said.
“Obviously the sending-off didn’t help and they had to sit and defend and I thought they did that really well.
“I thought big Dan Burn was superb at the back and Joelinton in midfield had an immense performance.
“Didn’t play that well, even with 11v11 for the first 28 minutes. They looked a bit leggy and looked a bit flat.”
Newcastle must improve vs Bournemouth

But their goal this season will be qualification for European football and if they are going to achieve that then performance levels will have to increase.
That starts with their trip to the Vitality Stadium this weekend, where they will once again be favourites to pick up another win.
