Alan Shearer has already given Yoane Wissa seal of approval as Newcastle now target Brentford star

Eddie Howe is now turning his attention towards Yoane Wissa.

from Eintracht Frankfurt – even offering a club record £70m for the Frenchman – although Liverpool are now making progress in talks to sign the striker.

state that the Magpies are targeting Wissa of Brentford instead.

Last season, the DR Congo international impressively scored 19 goals in 35 Premier League appearances for the Bees.

As Newcastle target Yoane Wissa, comments made by Alan Shearer back in December 2024 are worth revisiting.

Alan Shearer held his hands up over Yoane Wissa in 2024

After the Brentford No.11 scored in a 4-2 win over Newcastle last season, he received a glowing review from Shearer, even if his heroic performance came at the expense of the Geordie’s beloved Magpies.

The Newcastle legend named Wissa – who Nottingham Forest and Tottenham also want – in his Team of the Week for that round of fixtures, and wrote: “Newcastle simply couldn’t handle him. Incredibly, he’s scored in all six of his home appearances this season.”

On Match of the Day, Shearer – whose BBC salary has now been revealed – added: “Brentford were outstanding. Mbeumo and Wissa ran Newcastle ragged. They could have scored more.”

The Premier League’s record goalscorer also came close to adding the 28-year-old into his Team of the Season, stating: “Chris Wood and Yoane Wissa have also impressed throughout the campaign, so they deserve a mention here too.”

How much Yoane Wissa could cost Newcastle

Where the aforementioned Ekitike is valued at £86.5m by Eintracht Frankfurt, Newcastle – who also like Benjamin Sesko – could sign the Brentford star for under half of that figure.

TBR Football understand Newcastle could sign Wissa in a £40m deal, and the man born in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges is ready to leave Brentford, having already entered the final 12 months of his contract.

Therefore, while Wissa is admittedly five years older than Ekitike, Newcastle can get themselves a proven striker in the Premier League for a much cheaper price.
