Alan Shearer gives his honest thoughts on Alexander Isak’s behaviour at Newcastle after Liverpool bid
Alan Shearer is one of many Newcastle United fans trying to come to terms with the fact that Alexander Isak could soon leave to join Liverpool.
In the Premier League alone last season, Alexander Isak scored 23 goals in 34 games, a remarkable record for a striker who is every bit as good as Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.
Of course, that is why Liverpool made an opening bid for Isak, one that was swiftly rejected by Newcastle.
TBR Football revealed last week that Isak was confident of securing a move to Liverpool, and that perhaps explains why Eddie Howe’s side are exploring other striker options.
Newcastle are interested in signing Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig for example, even if the German club are demanding big money for the relatively unproven 22-year-old.
Alan Shearer gives his verdict on Alexander Isak’s push to join Liverpool
That being said, amid reports of Isak wanting to leave, the striker not going on the club’s pre-season tour, and his decision to train at his old club Real Sociedad instead, Alan Shearer has now given his thoughts on the situation.
Speaking on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast, Shearer was asked how he felt about Isak’s behaviour, which has angered some Newcastle fans.

However, Shearer said he understood Isak’s choices, even if he might not like them.
Shearer explained: “No, I’m not angry at all towards him, I understand how football works, I know what happens in and around the game.
“I probably understand his mentality. Do I like it? Do I understand it? Probably two different things.
“But I know what football is about and I know how it works, and obviously Liverpool have been into him or his agent.
“I just thought it might have happened next year and if it really is impossible for Eddie to turn him around and he says no, and it sounds like that is the case, I want him to be out now, you get your big money for him, whoever’s prepared to pay that and you get other people in, hopefully beforehand, and then you move on.
“As I said, no individual is bigger than any football club, and if he doesn’t want to be there, fine, get what you can and get him out and say thanks very much for the memories, off you go.”
Who is the best Alexander Isak replacement for Newcastle?
If Newcastle do cash in like Shearer suggests, then Howe will need to swiftly find a replacement.
And unfortunately for those at St James’ Park, Liverpool have perhaps already bought the closest stylistic alternative to Isak, Hugo Ekitike.
Newcastle have tried to sign Ekitike several times over recent years, only to be pipped to the Frenchman this summer by Liverpool.
And perhaps as many expected, Ekitike is already impressing in Liverpool training — a player who might not actually be too thrilled to see Isak arrive himself.
That being said, perhaps Newcastle should target Paris Saint-Germain’s Randal Kolo Muani, who is a lot more proven than Sesko at this stage of his career.
It’s previously been reported that Newcastle are interested in Muani, and he is the kind of superstar striker who would be capable of filling Isak’s boots.
A difficult situation for Howe to handle, but one that can still be rescued from a Newcastle point of view.
