Alan Shearer delivers five-word reaction to Newcastle’s 4-4 draw with Luton
Newcastle United played out a 4-4 draw with Luton Town in their Premier League encounter at St James’ Park.
The Magpies twice took the lead against the Hatters, who twice restored parity before then racing into a two-goal lead.
Newcastle didn’t let their heads drop, however, and went on to score twice to salvage a share of the spoils on Tyneside.
Magpies legend Alan Shearer took to after the game with a five-word verdict. Namely, “what a game that was”.
Newcastle and Luton play out rollercoaster eight-goal thriller
Sean Longstaff broke the deadlock for Newcastle in the seventh minute of the game, sweeping home after connecting with Kieran Trippier’s cross into the box.
Gabriel Osho equalised for Luton on 21 minutes, heading home from close range after a free kick was nodded into his path.
Longstaff then netted again just two minutes later to put the Magpies back in front, taking the time to control in the box and fire home after Anthony Gordon’s effort was parried into his path.
However, Ross Barkley’s 40th-minute goal ensured parity at the break, another goal borne out of poor defending as the veteran fired home after Martin Dubravka kept out an Alfie Doughty effort.

Luton then raced into a 4-2 lead around the hour mark, with Carlton Morris scoring a 59th-minute penalty and Elijah Adebayo netting three minutes later after Barkley slipped him in on the right.
Newcastle set about trying to get something from the game and only had to wait until the 67th minute for Kieran Trippier to make it 4-3 with a volley at the back post, his first goal since August 2022.
Then, in the 73rd minute, the returning Harvey Barnes – making his first appearance since September – struck to make it 4-4.
Miley won the ball off Barkley, and when it broke to Barnes, the substitute fired a 20-yard shot into the left-hand corner of the net for a share of the spoils.
