Alan Shearer blown away by ‘brilliant’ Everton player once compared to Arjen Robben

Everton winger Andros Townsend has made it into Alan Shearer’s latest Premier League Team of the Week.

The Toffees came from behind to run out 3-1 winners over Burnley at Goodison Park on Monday.

Despite falling behind to Ben Mee’s 53rd-minute header, Everton turned the game around in a seven-minute salvo.

Michael Keane nodded home on the hour mark after Townsend whipped in a superb cross for the Toffees defender.

The Everton summer signing then let rip with a 25-yard rocket five minutes later to put the Blues ahead.

Finally, Demarai Gray raced through on goal from Doucoure’s superb pinpoint pass and slotted home a minute later.

An impressive night’s work for Everton and for Townsend, the only Toffees player in Shearer’s XI.

“A brilliant display,” the Premier League legend.

“Produced an assist for the equaliser and then netted a stunning strike from distance.”

The result saw Everton go fourth in the Premier League table with 10 points from four games.

Up next for the Toffees is Aston Villa away on Saturday, 5:30pm BST kickoff.

Everton ace Andros Townsend – the story so far

Townsend penned a two-year contract at Goodison Park after leaving Crystal Palace in the summer.

The 30-year-old was Everton’s first signing since Rafael Benitez became the new Toffees manager.

Prior to joining the Toffees, Townsend made 185 competitive appearances for Palace, registering 16 goals and 28 assists.

And before joining Palace, he had been on the books at Newcastle and Spurs, where he came through the ranks.

In 2013, Harry Redknapp famously compared Townsend to Arjen Robben after he was called up to the England squad.

“If you look at Arjen Robben, Andros Townsend is the closest thing we have produced to him,” the quoted him as saying.

“I’m not saying he is Robben yet, he is not, but he is very similar.

“He plays on the right, dribbles well, runs at people, gets shots at goal.

“I think he could be fantastic on that big pitch at Wembley, a real threat.”

Townsend has won 13 caps for England.
