Alan Shearer discusses Tottenham player Dele Alli after draw against Liverpool
that Dele Alli is in “last-chance saloon” at Tottenham Hotspur. But Shearer also praised the Spurs ace for his performance in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool.
Tottenham were excellent throughout the game, somewhat ripping up the script to draw against one of the leading contenders for the Premier League title. Indeed, Spurs took the lead through Harry Kane.
The England skipper getting his second Premier League goal of the season – but he might have been shown a red card moments later. A tackle on Andy Robertson received a yellow, but many have since suggested a red.
Diogo Jota scored controversially for Liverpool after a potential handball from Mo Salah, before Andy Robertson put Liverpool 2-1 up. Robertson was sent off for a horrific tackle on Harry Kane, and Son made it 2-2.
A brilliant game and Dele was central to it. He should have had a goal himself, only for Alisson to produce a near-impossible save. It will certainly serve as a headache for Antonio Conte, and Shearer praised Dele.

“I was really impressed with Dele Alli today,”. “Last chance saloon for him really. Nuno didn’t fancy him, Jose didn’t fancy him. Alisson pulled off an unbelievable save, but he got in there all afternoon.
“Driving forward, with the ball, or offering options. Timing of the runs was perfect. He was an England regular, he has got to keep getting that chance – and be consistent.”
Shearer on Dele: Surely Tottenham star drops to bench on Wednesday?
It is an intriguing one. Obviously, Conte prefers a 3-4-3 system with two hard-working midfielders in the middle of the park. Against Liverpool, he used Harry Winks to hold, Tanguy Ndombele in between and Dele as a 10.
Ultimately, a three-man midfield but of the three, Dele was the one looking to join the attack. The energy, the fluidity; it worked. Perhaps better than the combination of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp.
Tottenham face West Ham in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. Of course, it depends on the rest of Conte’s available players – but if Hojbjerg and Skipp are fit, could Dele be back on the bench?
