Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker now say whether there is any chance Anthony Gordon’s red card will be overturned

In what was a rare moment of madness from the typically measured Anthony Gordon, the Newcastle United winger pushed Jean Paul van Hecke in face and was shown a red card against Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup.

While the Newcastle༒ players protested referee Anthony Taylor’s decision, his mind was made up as Gordon was sent off.

Anthony Gordon༒ would have been hoping that the Magpies still manage to win the game after Tariq Lamptey was red carded shortly after his dismissal.

๊However, Danny Welbeck scored a late winner to send Brighton through to the quarter-finals of the competition.

🧸The disappointment for Gordon will not just be his rash decision to push Van Hecke and the result of Sunday’s contest but also the fact that he is now suspended to face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.

Eddie Howe🌃 will be equally devastated as their much-awaited contest against Arne Slot’s side gave them the chance to win the competition after their heartbreaking 2-1 defeat in the final against Manchester United two years ago.

Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker says there’s “no chance” Anthony Gordon red card is overturned

Alongside Alexander Isak, Gordon is Newcastle’s best player and as a result, Liverpool♈ have just been handed a major advantage in their pursuit to retain their Carabao Cup trophy.

Roy Keane emphathised with Gordon’s sending off🐼 and ultimately, several players have lashed out just like the Englishman on a football pitch. Newcastle are set to appeal the decision in the hopes that the former Everton winger is available for the final against Liverpool.

But Gary Lineker﷽ feels that there is no chance Gordon’s red card is overturned now.

𝄹Lineker said on The Rest Is Football podcast: “First and foremost, Anthony Gordon, what have you done? He must be sitting there after the game, all last night, I bet he didn’t sleep last night. He’s got himself a three-game ban, he’ll miss now the Carabao Cup. Eddie Howe said after the game we’re going to have a look at it and if we think we can appeal, we will but I don’t think there’s a chance in hell. It’s a real shame in a moment of utter madness.”

Alan Shearer⛄ agreed, adding: “Crazy. Even if they decide to appeal, they’ve got no chance of winning it because it was a clear red card. I mean, I haven’t got a clue what he’s doing. I know you get drawn into the moment of the game and all that but it has to be in your mind, thinking, you actually should know that anything stupid, then you’re in danger of missing the Carabao Cup final.”

ꦕ“And I just think, ‘Oh my God, that’s a massive blow for Newcastle. A stupid thing to do and not only has he cost his team yesterday, he could cost his team in the Carabao because he’s one of Newcastle’s big-hitters and he’s having a very, very good season.”

Dermot Gallagher says whether Anthony Gordon’s red card could be overturned

꧙Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher sided with Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker as he feels there is simply no chance Gordon’s red card is overturned and leads to a successful appeal.

🌃Gallagher said on Sky Sports News: “I think it was a very unwise thing for Anthony Gordon to do.”

♏“The whistle had gone, play should’ve been stopped and for whatever reason he chose to take a very, very unwise action. Once you put your hands on the player’s face like he did and he put both as well, a really aggressive pushing motion. I think it was inevitable he was going to get a red card.”

🅺“Why it’s a big talking point is because of the Carabao Cup coming up. He’s now going to miss that game unless he wins his appeal which I would suggest he has no chance whatsoever in my opinion.

ಞ“Appealing against a red card decision like that, you have to prove the referee has made a clear and obvious mistake. I don’t think when you look at the images anybody can say he has made a clear and obvious mistake. Whether they will appeal that a three-match ban is too much is a different matter. I can’t seriously see them winning an appeal and getting a three-match ban overturned whatsoever.”

𒆙Harvey Barnes or even Joelinton could now be set to replace Gordon as Newcastle fans will be hoping either one of them has the game of their lives against Liverpool — with the in-form wideman also set to miss important fixtures against West Ham and Brentford.
