Alan Brazil urges Arsenal to sign £60m Premier League striker if they can’t get Ivan Toney

With the January transfer window now in full swing, Alan Brazil has urged Arsenal to consider the signing of a Premier League striker.

Arsenal’s woes in front of goal over the last few weeks have been well documented, and Mikel Arteta doesn’t currently have a goalscorer in his squad.

Gabriel Jesus has some remarkable qualities, but is never going to be a ruthless finisher on a consistent basis.

Moreover, there’s doubts whether Eddie Nketiah quite has the ability to lead the line for a side hoping to win the game’s biggest prizes.

That being said, when speaking on this morning, Brazil suggested a name that hasn’t been mentioned for a while.

If Arsenal can’t get Ivan Toney in January, Brazil thought they should be chasing Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Perhaps not a popular choice with some Arsenal fans, but Brazil was convinced the striker would score goals.

Alan Brazil thinks Arsenal should pivot to Dominic Calvert-Lewin in January

Speaking to Ally McCoist, Brazil said: “So, I was just going to touch on Calvert-Lewin, so he’s got off his red card and rightly so, that was a joke.

“And I was just thinking if they can’t get the boy from Brentford, if they can’t get Ivan, then would Everton sell Calvert-Lewin? Or are they just worried about his injury problems that he’s got?”

McCoist replied: “No chance. You’ve got to take that into account as well.”

Brazil: “He’d finish, I think he’d score a lot of goals.”

McCoist: “So do I, but I don’t think there’s any way Everton would sell him. Imagine Everton fans if they sold Calvert-Lewin?”

That ship has sailed

Perhaps a few years ago Calvert-Lewin did look like an exciting choice for Arsenal.

However, with the England striker suffering a terrible run with injuries, he doesn’t look like a player Arsenal should spend on in January.

Moreover, Calvert-Lewin hasn’t really been finishing his chances for Everton since his return either.

The striker doesn’t quite look sharp yet, which is understandable given his long disruption with injury.

Calvert-Lewin has just three goals in his 16 Premier League appearances this season – he needs time to rebuild.

So whilst McCoist and Brazil may be convinced that Calvert-Lewin could score goals for Arsenal if he arrived in January, he’d hardly be an upgrade on their current options.

Jesus and Nketiah may not be scoring the goals of Erling Haaland, but they don’t seem less effective than Calvert-Lewin.

That being said, Micah Richards has actually suggested a very ambitious striker target for Arsenal.
