Report: Club could lodge bid for Tottenham’s ‘most skilful’ player following Chelsea this weekend

Tottenham Hotspur could still end up selling man of the moment Steven Bergwijn this winter, with reports claiming that Ajax are planning to put in a second bid for the Dutchman after Sunday’s game against Chelsea.

has reported that the Dutch giants have seen a £15m bid rejected for Bergwijn already. It’s suggested Spurs wanted closer to £20m for their pacey forward. But with Bergwijn’s late show at Leicester this week, there are fears in the Ajax camp his price could have gone up again.

However, report that Ajax could yet make another bid for Bergwijn this weekend. They suggest the European Cup winners will make a decision on Bergwijn after Spurs take on Chelsea. The Dutchman’s performance this weekend, then, could well have an impact on his immediate future with the club.

Bergwijn was one of the players immediately identified by Spurs fans as being in trouble when Antonio Conte took over as manager. But in recent weeks, Bergwijn has been brought back into the fold. Indeed, Conte admitted he wanted to see more of the former PSV man.

The 24-year-old is admired by some of his teammates, too. Dele Alli is among them after previously admitting that Bergwijn is the ‘most skilful’ player at the club.

TBR’s View: Bergwijn Deserving More Tottenham Chances?

On recent form and based on his Leicester masterclass, then he does deserve more opportunities.

The other big reason for Spurs keeping Bergwijn is how do they find a replacement? We’ve already seen in this window how hard it is to get deals over the line. Letting someone with Bergwijn’s attributes go and trying to get someone else in with just over a week to go, is nigh on impossible.

Of course, Ajax could put up a massive fee to tempt Spurs. But that seems unlikely, so if Bergwijn does now go, it would more surprising than not.
