Agent says ‘excellent’ Newcastle player could now leave this year

Martin Dubravka’s agent has hinted that the Newcastle United goalkeeper could leave this summer the 35-year-old isn’t playing regularly.

The Slovakian international has filled in for Nick Pope in recent weeks with the Newcastle no. 1 out until March, though Dubravka has taken up the role expertly for the Magpies.

The shot-stopper has erased any transfer questions Newcastle had over signing a goalkeeper this January, though Dubravka’s agent still thinks there’s a chance that the former Sparta Prague star could leave.

Zika said on Dubravka’s future : “I dare say that he will finish this season in Newcastle. I personally think, and we talked about it with Martin, that now he has excellent ‘timing’ for everything.

“He’s playing, he’s getting better and better in every game and then the European Championships will come and he’ll only have a year left on his contract. If he plays well in the Euros in Germany, he can get into an excellent position.

“I can imagine that Newcastle will offer him a contract extension for a year or two. In England, goalkeepers mature like wine and their loyalty is viewed very positively. However, we wouldn’t rule out that he will want to look somewhere else.”

Newcastle would be crazy to let Martin Dubravka leave this summer

Whilst Pope is expected to reclaim his starting position between the sticks once the England international is back to full fitness, there’s no denying that Dubravka has proven himself this season.

The 35-year-old has impressed for the Magpies between the sticks this campaign, with Dubravka showing that he is still as good as when first joined Newcastle back in 2018.

And whilst there are some logical reasons to why Dubravka wants to leave, Newcastle can’t let their backup goalkeeper leave this summer, with the Slovakian still having so much left in the tank.
