After Timo Werner, Tottenham should now make £18m star Chelsea sold their top January target

With Timo Werner now close to signing for Tottenham Hotspur on loan, Ange Postecoglou’s side have made a great start to the January window.

Werner’s move to Spurs has now been handed the coveted ‘here we go’ and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the deal was announced this weekend.

Perhaps the German’s previous spell in England could be deemed a failure, however the striker still earned a lot of plaudits.

Plenty of Chelsea fans were gutted to see Werner leave the club, a player who was equally frustrating as he was exciting to watch.

Of course, those fans have had to watch their club sell quite a few assets who have gone onto bigger things in the past – Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah being two names that stand out.

And after making the most of Werner’s departure from Chelsea, it’s time that Tottenham sought another ex-blue in the January transfer window.

Marc Guehi has long been mentioned as a player Spurs are seriously interested in, and his arrival in January could prove transformative.

There’s no doubt that Crystal Palace would demand a very high fee to let Guehi move mid season, however, it could be worth it for Tottenham.

Micky van de Ven is now returning to the first team fold after his injury, and Guehi could be his perfect partner in waiting.

Of course, some Tottenham fans may be wondering where that leaves Cristian Romero.

The Argentinian has made big improvements to his game under Postecoglou, but he’s still proved a liability.

Spurs rightfully feel as if they deserve a top four spot this season, and they may even have eyes on a title push.

And with the evidence we have from his appearances this campaign thus far, Romero could cost his team.

Not because of his ability, rather his temperament.

Guehi would be a clear upgrade, and just like Werner he would add much needed depth to Tottenham’s squad in January.

Spurs have a huge opportunity this season, they’re playing outstanding football.

And although Radu Dragusin is looking likely to be the centre-back they sign this month, Guehi’s arrival would be a much bigger display of their ambition.

James Maddison’s move has been a huge success, and Guehi is an England international of similar quality.

Moreover, Guehi’s homegrown status could also be a huge positive for Postecoglou’s further recruitment in the coming years.

Yes the fee might be big, one that will dwarf the Palace paid in 2021, but a deal looks like a no-brainer from our point of view.
