After Riccardo Calafiori, Arsenal are ‘close’ to their sealing their third transfer of the summer

With a deal for Riccardo Calafiori set to be announced imminently, Arsenal are already closing in on their next transfer.

David Raya was the first player to officially sign for Arsenal this summer, even if his loan move becoming a permanent one was ultimately a bit of a procession.

But after Arsenal have signed Calafiori they are still targeting three more deals, a statement of the club’s ambition.

Having fallen short of Manchester City for two seasons in a row, Mikel Arteta has seemingly decided that his squad depth is an issue.

Arsenal have a brilliant first eleven but Arteta seldom feels he can rotate his team.

And perhaps when Arsenal lost a crucial tie with Aston Villa late in the season at the Emirates, fatigue did play a factor.

That being said, Calafiori will definitely add better depth on the left side of Arsenal’s defence, a player who could potentially even force a starting spot.

And in regards to who Arsenal might sign next, Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino looks well-placed to do the same just in front of the Italian.

Arsenal now getting closer to sealing a deal for Spain star Mikel Merino

Arteta would love Merino’s skillset at Arsenal, someone who looks incredibly well positioned for the number eight role.

In that regard, Merino could finally be Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka replacement – someone who could allow Declan Rice to return to the six.

That being said, Spanish journalist has just shared that Arsenal are now getting close to sealing a deal for Merino.

Marin shared his update on X late on Monday evening and seemed to confirm that Arteta was close to landing his man.

He simply said: “Getting closer to Arsenal Mikel Arteta and Mikel Merino.”

Of course, this will be music to the ears of a lot of Arsenal supporters who would have watched Merino thrive at the Euros, playing a similar squad role as he may do in north London.

Fortunately, Merino does already have experience of the Premier League too given his time with Newcastle United.

And if Merino were to follow Calafiori to north London, then Arsenal’s left-hand side would look more than ready for the new season.

That being said, West Ham could be about to cause Arsenal a big transfer problem elsewhere.
