After Jurgen Klopp’s comments, is Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge ready for a stellar season?
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has suggested that Reds forward Daniel Sturridge is in the “best condition” he has been in during the German’s time at the club, as reported by .
Klopp said:“He is in good physical shape, absolutely. Daniel could be part of the full pre-season so far so that’s very important. It’s looking good.”
He added: “[Pre-season] was quite intense, especially in England. He was part of pretty much each session so it’s good.”
The ‘intense’ pre-season has been spent in Hong Kong ahead of the Asian Cup, a pre-season competition which features a number of Premier League teams.
As the former Chelsea man is likely to complete the competition, going into the 2017/18 campaign, Klopp will have the luxury of a fit Daniel Sturridge to pick from.
This has been a rarity throughout his one and a half years in England, with Sturridge often absent due to injuries. In the last three seasons, the 27-year-old has featured in just 46 league games.
It has been a real shame to see such a talented player so badly blighted by injuries. No one can forget his remarkable partnership with Luis Suarez in the 2013/14 season, where he scored 21 goals as the Reds came so close to their first Premier League title.
The Englishman is a constant threat when he does feature, however, and in terms of pure goal-scoring and finishing ability, there is no one better in Liverpool’s squad, and very few in the Premier League for that matter.
The had linked Sturridge with a move away from the club this summer. Yet, as the Englishman was touted for a move to West Ham United or Paris Saint Germain, Jurgen Klopp blocked his exit, suggesting that the German manager sees the striker as a valuable member of his squad.
With Liverpool looking to compete on all fronts next season, domestically and in Europe, one thing a fit Sturridge will provide for definite is squad depth, alongside Divock Origi and Roberto Firmino, as a player who can lead the line.
Firmino is likely to remain as Klopp’s number one up-top, but Sturridge certainly provides goal-scoring, movement and a very different option up-front. If he manages to stay fit, he could just turn out to be one of the Reds’ most valuable assets next season.
