After £30m Liam Delap deal, player Olivier Giroud called “magic” is now pushing to sign for Chelsea too

Chelsea are working hard to improve the squad for Enzo Maresca before the start of the FIFA Club World Cup.

The tournament could keep Chelsea busy for as long as a month if the Blues progress far, so those on the recruitment team at Stamford Bridge have wasted no time in getting some transfers sorted.

Chelsea have already signed Liam Delap in a £30m move from Ipswich Town – adding the England international to earlier deals for Dario Essugo and Geovany Quenda – and a goalkeeper could soon follow after Mike Maignan shared his feelings with AC Milan.

Mike Maignan wants Chelsea move

Kaveh Solhekol of Sky Sports now states that the France international is eager to make the move to Stamford Bridge.

Maignan – who Chelsea bid for in 2023 – is refusing to sign a new contract at the San Siro, with his current terms expiring in 12 months, so if AC Milan fail to sell him this summer, they risk losing the Frenchman for free in 2026.

Solhekol adds that the AC Milan No.16 has directly asked to join Chelsea, and a deal could be done before the FIFA Club World Cup begins on Saturday 14th June.

Maignan – who Olivier Giroud once called “magic” – kept 15 clean sheets in 53 appearances for AC Milan last season, conceding 59 goals.

Enzo Maresca could get a bargain

Chelsea have spent a fortune on young stars with potential who could come good, such as £88.5m to sign Mykhailo Mudryk and £30m on Estevao Willian.

However, the opposite would happen if a deal for Maignan materialises.

The man born in Cayenne is a vastly experienced goalkeeper with 28 caps for France and 343 senior club appearances under his belt at the age of 29, and crucially, he could cost as little as £20m due to his contract situation.

It would be a move which goes against the grain at Chelsea, who have almost exclusively signed young talent under Todd Boehly, but in a position as significant as the goalkeeping department, an experienced, reliable figure like Maignan is needed.
