Could West Ham’s Adrian be set for a move to Newcastle United or Crystal Palace?

Newcastle United and Crystal Palace are both considering making a move for 30-year-old West Ham goalkeeper Adrian.

The  report that the Spaniard may be available for transfer after the arrival of Jose Hart on a season-long loan deal.

Adrian finished last season as number one and had his contract extended by two years, but he is now facing a precarious future.

The 30-year-old has been told that he needs to be playing regularly to earn a place in Spain’s World Cup squad and that will provide him with the motivation to seek a move away.

The above tweet shows the frustration that Adrian is feeling and the comments from one of the club’s owners regarding Hart haven’t helped the situation.

It does seem unlikely that the Spaniard will be used ahead of their new recruit and an exit is increasingly likely.

Would he be a good signing for Newcastle United or Crystal Palace?

Adrian has lots of experience in the Premier League with over 100 appearances, which makes him an appealing option for a number of the clubs beneath the top six. Rafa Benitez has made it clear that he wants a new goalkeeper to compete with Rob Elliot and the manager’s compatriot would be a smart pick-up. He is a big character and able to have a positive impact on the dressing room.

The sweeper-keeper is a growing role in football and Adrian has the confidence to come off his line when required. His willingness to take risks brings big rewards when carried out well, but he can make errors at times. This was one of the reasons that he was dropped for Darren Randolph last season during the winter months.

The disappointment of being replaced by Hart at West Ham coupled by his desire to make the Spanish World Cup squad provides him with great motivation for the new season. He would be a good signing for either Newcastle or Crystal Palace.

How likely is a move?

Based on the arrival of Hart and the tweet from Adrian earlier, it seems likely that he will be on the move this summer. He needs to be a regular to make the Spain World Cup squad and he will be desperate to be a part of it. As a goalkeeper with over 100 appearances in the Premier League, he is a player that will attract interest.

Newcastle United seem to be the club most desperate to add a number one to their squad and Adrian’s style coupled with his experience makes him a good fit for the Magpies.

Crystal Palace could also be in the running after selling Steve Mandanda earlier in the window. It will be appealing for him to stay in London and he would suit the style that Frank de Boer wants to bring to Selhurst Park. It remains to be seen if either club does make a move for the Hammers’ keeper, but if there is serious interest from one, it is likely that a transfer could be completed. His future at West Ham looks bleak at best.
