‘Absolutely sensational’: John Barnes in awe of £100k-a-week Liverpool ace

Liverpool icon John Barnes has waxed lyrical about Reds forward Sadio Mane, in conversation with .

Jurgen Klopp’s charges made it two wins from two in the Premier League at the weekend, getting their title defence to the perfect start.

After overcoming Leeds United in a thrilling and nerve-wracking 4-3 win in their league opener, Liverpool then recorded a 2-0 win away at Chelsea on Sunday.

Mane once again shone for the Anfield side, his speed on the break leading to Andreas Christensen hauling him down and receiving a red card for his troubles.

The Senegalese went on to score both of his side’s goals after the interval, a fine header followed by a superb show of perseverance as he forced Kepa Arrizabalaga into a mistake and slotted home.

On , Jamie Carragher spoke of how Mane is likely to challenge Barnes in Liverpool’s all-time XI on the left side of attack.

“Mane has been fantastic, of course,” responded Barnes. “What he’s done in the time he’s been here has been absolutely sensational.

“But, as we saw with Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez, if he leaves this season or at the end of the season after being here for four years, you can’t compare them.

“If they stay there over a period of time, then you can compare him to any great player from the past.

“Mane has been great, but all three of them have been great, Salah as well and, for me, Firmino still is my favourite player as he links it all together.”

There isn’t much more that can be said about Mane that hasn’t already been said regarding his quality – he has been a star for Liverpool over the past few years, pure and simple.

He should already be counted amongst Liverpool’s greats following four years at Anfield and, with his £ contract taking him to 2023, he will no doubt provide more moments of quality and more silverware for the Reds.
